Resins are naturally extruded by some plants – especially trees – to serve as a protective bandage in case of injury, shielding the wounded area from insects and potential pathogens. The largest use of commercial resin is somewhat similar – it is a primary component of the varnishes that protect our wood. From waterproofing a deck to varnishing wooden furniture, resins provide a protective surface that prevent contamination from the elements, scratches and other physical blemishes.
Other uses for industrial resins include as components of adhesives (epoxy glue, for example, is made from epoxy resins and are used in the construction of everything from golf clubs to aircrafts), and in food glazing. They are often used as raw materials in the synthesis of other organic compounds, and are components of several incenses and perfumes (especially those with a “woodsy” smell).
