The differences between specialty, fine, and commodity chemicals can be likened to the differences between Michelin star dishes, delicacies like caviar, and commodity crops like rice: commodity chemicals are produced on a large scale for low prices, fine chemicals are manufactured in much smaller amounts sold for much higher prices, and specialty chemicals are compounds of fine and commodity chemical “ingredients” mixed together in specific proportions to serve one specific purpose. By nature, the specialty chemical industry is extremely diversified – when each product is keyed to one specific utilization, there must be a wide offering of products in order to fill a wide variety of needs.
This industry has advanced the overall chemical industry from standard manufacturers to customer solution partners. Specialty chemical companies don’t sell products for what they are, but, rather, for what they can do – uses that are often tailored to fit one client’s specifications. While commodity chemicals are often physically indistinguishable from one provider to the next, specialty chemicals are each unique, often patented or trademarked. This product and end-use diversity allow specialty chemicals to influence most other segments of industry; most notably, they are key components of both end-use products and outside industry processes, from personal and home care products and food and beverages, to construction materials and electronics manufacturing.
